Silicon Metal 4-4-1 is a high-purity elemental silicon (Si ≥ 99%) with tightly controlled residuals — Fe ≤ 0.4%, Al ≤ 0.4%, Ca ≤ 0.1% — supplied in 10-100mm lump per the GB/T 2881 grade 441 basis. The "4-4-1" code reflects the maximum Fe/Al/Ca fractions, the three impurities that govern downstream behavior. In aluminum casting alloys, added silicon raises fluidity, narrows the freezing range, and improves castability and wear resistance; the low Fe and Ca keep intermetallics and gas/dross formation in check. In the silicones route, 441 feeds the direct (Rochow) process to chlorosilanes, where Fe and Al directly affect selectivity, and it serves as polysilicon feedstock. Typical aluminum alloy additions run roughly 1-13 wt% Si depending on the target alloy (hypoeutectic to eutectic). Match the grade to your impurity tolerance. The 441 grade caps Fe ≤ 0.4%, Al ≤ 0.4%, Ca ≤ 0.1% at Si ≥ 99%, suited to aluminum alloys, silicones (Rochow), and polysilicon feedstock where Fe/Al/Ca affect selectivity and intermetallics. The 553 grade allows higher residuals (Fe ≤ 0.5%, Al ≤ 0.5%, Ca ≤ 0.3%, Si ≥ 98.5%) for less demanding aluminum casting. What is the typical addition rate for Silicon Metal 441 in aluminum alloys?
Dosage is set by the target alloy chemistry, not a fixed rate. Hypoeutectic Al-Si casting alloys commonly run roughly 5-9 wt% Si, while near-eutectic grades approach 11-13 wt%; some wrought and special alloys use 1-3 wt%. Because 441 is near-pure silicon (Si ≥ 99%), charge calculations are straightforward against your melt target. Account for the existing silicon in your base metal and revert when computing the make-up addition.
How is 441 packaged, and what are the lead time and MOQ?
Standard packaging is 1 MT jumbo big bag, palletized, in FCL containers, with 10-100mm lump sizing per the 441 basis. MOQ is 20 MT FCL or 5 MT LCL. Lead time depends on routing: sea CIF runs about 28-35 days, road/ferry alternatives 12-21 days, and Gebze bonded stock supports 24-48h pulls when held. Confirm sizing and tonnage on the RFQ so we quote the right route.
What quality documentation and testing come with each lot?
Each lot ships with a COA to EN 10204 3.1 and an MTC. Chemistry is verified by XRF with specific Fe/Al/Ca control against the 441 limits (Fe ≤ 0.4%, Al ≤ 0.4%, Ca ≤ 0.1%, Si ≥ 99%). Radiation certificate and certificate of origin are available, plus EUR.1 / A.TR for EU movement. If you require ICP cross-check or pre-shipment sampling, state it on the PO and we align acceptance testing to your inbound QC.
Can 441 substitute for other silicon sources, and what are the alternatives?
For aluminum alloying, 441 can replace lower-purity silicon or Al-Si master alloys where you want tighter Fe/Al/Ca control and predictable melt chemistry; verify the iron balance since master alloys shift it differently. For foundry and refractory work with looser residual limits, 553 is the practical alternative at lower cost.
